Walter Britt Ludlam, a resident of County Road 93, Abbeville, died early Monday night, Nov. 19, 2007, at the home of his daughter, Pamela Ludlam Murphy. He was 78.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007, in the Judson Baptist Church with the Revs. Gerald Ross, Frank Taylor and Thomas D. Gamble officiating. Graveside services will follow in the church cemetery with the Rev. John W. Helton Jr. officiating. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice, 2855 Ross Clark Circle, Suite 110, Dothan, AL 36301, or to Wiregrass Hospice of Eufaula, 831 W. Washington St., Eufaula, AL 36027.
Mr. Ludlam was born and reared in Eufaula, son of the late John Bunyan Ludlam Sr. and Ida Maebelle Efurd Ludlam. He moved to the Screamer community in 1955. Mr. Ludlam served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was also retired from the U.S. Army Reserve Unit in Abbeville with the rank of Sergeant after thirty-two years service. Mr. Ludlam was a member of the Judson Baptist Church where he formerly served as a Deacon and teacher for the Senior Adult Sunday School class.
Mr. Ludlam was the owner and operator of Britt Ludlam Used Cars and Antiques in Abbeville. In earlier years, he was employed at the Walter F. George Lock and Dam at Fort Gaines where he was involved in the initial construction and pouring of the first concrete at the dam. Mr. Ludlam was formerly employed at Fort Rucker and also had worked at several service stations in Abbeville.
Mr. Ludlam was preceded in death by his wife, Mamie Ludlam, his son-in-law, Charles Amos Murphy, a sister, Elizabeth Ilene Gilliam, three brothers, John Bunyan Ludlam Jr., Victor Thomas Ludlam and Billy Tom Ludlam.
Surviving relatives include his daughter, Pamela Ludlam Murphy, Abbeville; two granddaughters, Tina Murphy Scoggins, Abbeville; Gina Myree Murphy, Panama City Beach, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Aaliyah Scoggins and Haley Scoggins; a step-grandson, Charles A. (Chuck) Murphy and wife, Gina Barton Murphy, Abbeville; two step-great-grandchildren, Marybeth Murphy and Clay Murphy; a sister, Sybil Moats, Eufaula; a brother, William Wheeler Ludlam, Eufaula.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Billy Ludlam, Matt Ludlam, Ricky Ludlam, Tim Moats, Danny Moats and Ken Ludlam.
Western attire is acceptable at the funeral.
