Doris Still Mellette, of Blakely, Ga., died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007, at Early Memorial Nursing Home, Blakely, following an extended illness. She was 90.
The funeral will be Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, at 11 a.m. EST at Zion Freewill Baptist Church in Blakely, with burial to follow in the Sowhatchee Cemetery. The Rev. William Smith will officiate. Visitation will be Monday night from 6 until 8 p.m. EST at Manry-Jordan-Hodges Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Zion Freewill Baptist Church Piano Fund or to Wiregrass Hospice., 432 E. Shotwell St., Bainbridge, GA 39818.
Mrs. Mellette was born Feb. 22, 1917, to the late John Brothers Still and Annie Pearl Moore Still. She was a member of the Zion Freewill Baptist Church. Mrs. Mellette worked alongside her husband, the Rev. T.B. Mellette at a number of Freewill Baptist Churches where he was pastor. She was a woman of determined character with firm principles and those who came into close contact with her valued her in her own right. She was also a house mother at Andrew and Middle Georgia Colleges.
Surviving are two daughters, Duane Davis and husband, Bobby, of Blakely, Ga., and Becky Owen and husband, Aldine, of Edison, Ga.; five grandchildren, Laura Lynn Crouch and husband, Jimmy, of Duluth, Ga., Val Pitchford and husband, David, of Columbia, Kelli Nash and husband, Lane, of Athens, Ga., Tommy Owen and wife, Kelli, of Colquitt, Ga., and Michael Owen and wife, Lauri, of Summerfield, N.C.; 13 great-grandchildren also survive along with two sisters-in-law, Bernice Still of Blakely, Ga., and Catherine Still of Douglas, Ga.
Active pallbearers are Tommy Owen, Michael Owen, Lane Nash, Jimmy Crouch, David Pitchford, Davis Crouch Thomas Pitchford and Matthew Nash. Honorary pallbearers are John Louis Still, Clarence Still, John Millard Still, Jimmy Still, Nicky Still, Harold Still, Ronnie Still, Wilson Still and David Still.
