Mrs. Verna Lee Mathison Vaughn of Skipperville died Monday evening, Oct. 29, 2007, in Wesley Manor. She was 86.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church in Ozark with Dr. Christian E. Eckert and Dr. Judson Vaughn officiating. Her body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow in Ozark City Cemetery with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends in the First United Methodist Church Family Life Center following cemetery interment.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 167 E. Broad Street, Ozark, AL 36360, Skipperville United Methodist Church, 5088 Highway 105, Skipperville, AL 36374, or Fountain of Love, Methodist Home for the Aging, 718 Honeysuckle Road, Dothan, AL 36305.
Verna Lee Mathison Vaughn, the daughter of the late Oscar Cornelius and Telie Wilson Mathison, was born Dec. 4, 1920, in Skipperville, and graduated from Dale County High School in Ozark. She worked as a secretary in Washington, D.C., prior to attending Huntingdon College in Montgomery. She married Robert Lansing Vaughn before he received the call to preach in the Methodist Church.
Mrs. Vaughn was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ozark and an honorary member of the Administrative Board. She was also an honorary member of the Ozark Literary Club.
Mrs. Vaughn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 38 years, the Rev. Robert Lansing Vaughn Sr.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Cornelius and Sallie Mathison, Ed and Joyce Mathison, the Rev. Ovie Mathison and Solomon David Mathison; sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Jim Ramey; and brother-in-law, John Thomas Sheehane.
She is survived by her daughter, Verna Teresa Vaughn Bray, Skipperville; son, Judson Vaughn, Atlanta, Ga.; granddaughter, Verna Leah Bray, Boulder, Colo.; son-in-law, William O. Bray, Skipperville; sister, Annie Belle Sheehane, Ozark; sisters-in-law, Rachel Cole Mathison, Durham, N.C., Jacque Jobes Mathison, Dothan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home in Ozark, (334) 774-4551, is in charge of arrangements.
