Gavin “Devant” Burge, a resident of Wicksburg, AL died Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at his residence. He was 77.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 2, 2007 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Hays McKay and Rev. Ed Onley officiating. A private interment will follow with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday.
Flowers are being accepted or memorials may be made to the Wicksburg Fire and Rescue, 5340 Judge Logue Road, Newton, AL, 36352.
Mr. Burge was born on April 22, 1930, in Pearl River, Mississippi to Oscar and Eunice Miller Burge. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Burge resided in Pascagoula, Mississippi before settling in the Dothan area in 1965. He was general manager of Smith Motor Company for 25 years prior to his retirement.
Mr. Burge was an avid Alabama fan and loved Atlanta Braves Baseball. He also enjoyed fishing and playing dominoes. He was a member of the VFW and the Elks Lodge. He was of the Methodist faith and was a member of Heritage Methodist Church in Enterprise.
Survivors include his wife, Hattie Burge of Wicksburg; a son, Russell Burge and his wife, Sheila of Malvern; a daughter, Cathy Hinesley and her husband, Wally of Dothan; six grandchildren, Justin Cain and his wife, Jesse, Trevor Hinesley, Brent Burge and Brooke Burge, Jason Hinesley and Amanda Hinesley; four great-grandchildren, Cody, Allie and Jaci Cain and Ayden Burge; a sister, Faye Grubbs of Gulfport, Mississippi; several nieces and nephews and other family members.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank the Wicksburg Fire and Rescue for their assistance and caring over the years.
