Mr. Max Lamar Dixon of Geneva passed away Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007, at his home with his devoted family at his side, after a courageous battle with Corticobasal Ganglion Degeneration (CBGD). He was 73. Graveside funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Black Community Cemetery in Black with Chaplain Tom Heddle officiating and Sorrells Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Geneva today from 6 to 8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Covenant Hospice, 2855 Ross Clark Circle Suite 110, Dothan, AL 36301. Max was born Dec. 21, 1933, in Geneva County to the late Zeb and Lillie Mae Thames Dixon. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Army and retired after 20 years of service. During his military career he was an Infantry Indirect Fire Crewman and received several distinguished medals which included: Army Occupation Medal (Germany), Good Conduct Medal (5th Award), Expert Infantry Badge, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Berlin), Vietnam Service Medal with one silver and one bronze star, Combat infantry Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, three Overseas Service Bars, Army Commendation Medal, Purple Heart, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm and the National Defense Service Medal with OLC. His favorite past time was fishing, hunting and woodworking. He was also an avid sports fan and a member of Adoniram Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, three brothers, Jack, Ray Don and Jimmy Dixon all preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, JoAnn Brooks Dixon; one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Junior Mixon; two sons and daughters-in-law, Hobie and Shelia Dixon, Tommy and Sherri Dixon, all of Geneva; one brother, Hubert Dixon of Columbus, Ga.; one sister, Peggy Newby of Texas; seven grandchildren, Jana and Brian Mays, James Mixon, Jason and JoAnna Berry, Cobie and Heather Dixon, Leanne Dixon and Andy, Lance Dixon and Megan Dixon; two great-grandchildren, Brodey and Taylor Mixon; two sisters-in-law, Blondell and Harvey Golson, Athealone and Vernon Lewis; several nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.
