Shelby Earl Shelley, a resident of the Tumbleton community in Henry County, died Saturday afternoon, Aug. 25, 2007, at his home. He was 76.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007, in New Zion Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Joey Pettis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday at the mortuary in Headland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Zion Free Will Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Edna Whitehead, 302 Murray St., Headland, AL 36345 or to Covenant Hospice, 2855 Ross Clark Circle, Suite 110, Dothan, AL 36301.
Mr. Shelley was a lifelong resident of the Tumbleton Community in Henry County, son of the late Grover Cleveland (Pomp) Shelley Sr. and Queenie Bradshaw Shelley. He was a member of New Zion Free Will Baptist Church. Mr. Shelley was engaged in farming all his life. The family farm, which is known as K & E Farms, was selected Farm Family of the Year in 2002 and Mr. Shelley was awarded the Lifetime Farmer Award in 2000 for farming 50 or more years. He was preceded in death by two brothers,
Major Shelley and Jack Shelley.
Surviving relatives in-clude his wife of 57 years, Janelle Sanders Shelley, Tumbleton community; two daughters, Karen Shelley Herring and husband, James Larry Herring, Headland, Krista Shelley Williams and husband, David Williams, Tumbleton community; three sons, Kenny Shelley and wife, Marsha Hand Shelley, Alabaster, Kim Shelley, Cumming, Ga., Kirby Shelley and wife, Jan McCraney Shelley, Tumbleton community; three sisters, Dot Hardy and husband, L.J. Hardy, Nina Killingsworth, all of the Tumbleton community, Ida Wilson, Dothan; a brother, Cleveland Shelley, Tumbleton community; a sister-in-law, Ellie Mae Shelley, Tumbleton community; eight grandchildren, Ashley Shelley and wife, Staci Benefield Shelley, Scott Shelley and wife, Michelle Marr Shelley, Rachel Shelley, Jaime Herring Kidd and husband, Shaun Kidd, Zachary Shelley, Kasey Shelley, Shelley Williams and Breanna Shelley; six great-grandchildren, Olivia Shelley, Haisten Shelley, Hudson Shelley, Ethan Shelley, Emma Shelley and Shelby Kidd; several nieces and nephews.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Jerry Hardy, Roy Shelley, Johnny Shelley, Russell Killingsworth, David Teat and Gary Shelley.
