Mrs. Mattie Chesney

Mrs. Mattie Chesney, a resident of Hartford, passed away early Saturday afternoon, Aug. 18, 2007, at her residence following an extended illness. She was 84. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, at Northside Baptist Church with Dr. Glenn R. Mosteller, the Revs. Fred Smith and Randall Parnell officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhaven Cemetery with Shepard Funeral Home of Hartford officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time. Mrs. Chesney was born Jan. 22, 1923, in Spartanburg County, S.C., daughter of the late Lawrence and Inez Waddell Knighton, where she lived most all of her life. She moved to Hartford in September 2000 to live with her daughter and son-in-law. Mrs. Chesney was a lifelong member of Northside Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school superintendent for the junior department. She was also an accomplished singer and pianist and played in church for a number of years. Mrs. Chesney also enjoyed gardening, pottery and crocheting in her spare time. Mrs. Chesney is preceded in death by her husband, Carl Chesney, who passed away Oct. 13, 2006. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lodema and Bob Dittmar, Hartford; three grandsons, Greg Cooper and Scott Cooper, both of Woodruff, S.C., and Chad Cooper, Inman, S.C.; three great-grandchildren, Makayla Cooper, Justin Cooper and Josh Cooper. Shepard Funeral Home in Hartford, (334) 588-2230, is in charge of arrangements.
