Grace Floyd McClendon, a resident of Azalea Court Assisted Living and also Broad Street in Headland, died late Wednesday morning, Aug. 15, 2007, in a Dothan hospital. She was 86.
Funeral services will be Friday in the First Baptist Church of Headland at 11 a.m. with Dr. Cecil M. Sanders Jr. and the Rev. Norman C. Simmons officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the mortuary in Headland. At other times, the family will be at the home of a son, Don McClendon, 102 Cynthia Way in Headland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the "Together We Build Fund" of the First Baptist Church of Headland, 301 E. Church St., Headland, AL 36345.
Mrs. McClendon was born and reared in the Tumbleton community of Henry County, daughter of the late Stephen Grady Floyd and Ossie Willis Floyd. She moved to Headland in 1947. Mrs. McClendon was a 1939 graduate of Newville High School. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Headland where she was also a member of the Hope Sunday School Class and the Senior Adults. Mrs. McClendon was an active participant in the Burdeshaw-Solomon Senior Center. She was a co-owner and operator of Headland Jewelry Company with her husband, Carl McClendon, until his death in 1973. After the death of her husband, Mrs. McClendon owned and operated the jewelry store until her retirement in 1991. Her hobbies included flowers, sewing and crafts.
Mrs. McClendon was preceded in death by her husband, Carl McClendon; her granddaughter, Kimberly McClendon; her brother, Robert Edward Floyd and son-in-law, Gary M. Lewis.
Mrs. McClendon was the loving mother of a daughter and two sons, Glenda McClendon Mullins Lewis of Lynn Haven, Fla., Don Floyd McClendon and wife, Marilyn Espy McClendon, of Headland and J. Randy McClendon and wife, Beverly Kimble McClendon, of Vestavia Hills; other surviving relatives include a sister, Clotean Murray Smith and husband, Paul Smith, of Tumbleton community; six grandchildren, Melanie McClendon Smith and husband, Michael Smith, Jeff McClendon, Ken Mullins and wife, DeAnn Mullins, Brad Mullins and wife, Stephanie Mullins, Matt Mullins and wife, Eva Mullins, Ryan McClendon and fiance, Anna Cather; 12 great-grandchildren, Mac Smith, Sam Smith, Emma and Ally Smith, Matthew McClendon, Sarah McClendon, Stevie-Marie Mullins, Gracie Mullins, Bradley Mullins, Ethan Mullins, Madison Mullins and Katie Bianco.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Jeff McClendon, Ryan McClendon, Ken Mullins, Brad Mullins, Matt Mullins and Michael Smith.
