Jean Hollis Hawkins Buettner of Dothan passed away Wednesday, August 1, 2007, at her residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be Sunday in First United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. with the Rev. John D. Reese and Dr. James Sanders III officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Hill. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until service time at the church.
Flowers are being accepted or memorial contributions can be made to First United Methodist Church, Older Adult Ministry, 1380 W. Main St., Dothan, AL 36303 or to Covenant Hospice, 2855 Ross Clark Circle, Suite 110, Dothan, AL 36301.
Mrs. Buettner was born on Nov. 16, 1919, in Houston County, the daughter of H.A. and Anne Hollis. She graduated from Slocomb High School. She attended Troy State University and received a B.S. and masters in English and accomplished post graduate work as well. Mrs. Buettner was an influential teacher at both Northview High School and Dothan High School touching the lives of many students. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa teacher sorority, the Rev. Lucy Hathaways Cornerstone Prayer Group, First United Methodist Church, and the Onyx Smart Sunday School class.
Mrs. Buettner was predeceased by her parents; her husbands, W.J. Hawkins and Otto A. Buettner; her daughter, Jeri Hawkins Hebron and her son, David Hawkins; her brother, Charles Hollis; her sister, Frances Purvis.
Mrs. Buettner is survived by her daughter, Linda Hawkins Woodruff; her granddaughter, Lisa Hawkins Nunn and her husband Taylor Nunn; great-granddaughter, Ella Hollis Nunn and a greatgrandson, George Taylor Nunn Jr.; a sister, Neva Alley; sisters-in-law, Elma G. Hollis and Janis Hawkins Moseley; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Robert Byrd of Sunset Memorial Park, Funeral Home and Crematory of Dothan, (334) 983-6604, is in charge of arrangements.
