Updated: January 7, 2009
Making state headlines, The Alabama Department of Transportation could get a refund of nearly five million dollars in contempt fines it has paid in a long-running racial discrimination lawsuit. A special master overseeing some aspects of the lawsuit has recommended that a Federal Judge order a refund, plus interest. An attorney representing black employees says he will oppose a refund. It will be up to U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson to decide. The state has paid more than 17 million dollars in fines in the DOT hiring case.
