Updated: January 7, 2009
Dothan`s new police chief is officially approved by the city and now must be certified by the state. John Powell was hired Tuesday by resolution of the city comission, on the recommendation of City Manager Mike West. Chief Powell now has six months to get state certification, a requirement of all peace officers who come to work in Alabama from another state. Due to Powell`s considerable experience, he may be eligible for lateral entry, but he would still have to take an 80-hour refresher course in legal issues, firearms, physical agility, and CPR. John Powell begins his duties as chief on March 15th.
