Updated: January 7, 2009
National Arbor Day is still two months away, but the State of Alabama recognizes the holiday this week as it is the best time to plant trees in our area. Yesterday, the city of Dothan observed Arbor Day today by planting a tree on the lawn of the Civic Center in honor of several special citizens. Mayor Chester Sowell and commissioners were on hand to enjoy live entertainment by "The Friend`s Choir." The featured speaker was City Manager Mike West, who appropriately offered some statistics about trees. The tree that was planted is a Japanese Maple, which stays red most of the year, then turns yellow in autumn.
