DEADLY MOSQUE FIRE IN IRAN

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
At least 59 people are dead and more than 250 injured in Iran after a blaze that raged through a Tehran Mosque. The fire began after a female worshipper`s veil caught fire from a kerosene heater. The Mosque was filled with about 400 worshipers, more crowded than usual because of the Islamic month of Muharram, a holy time for Shiite Muslims. Women, who pray on the second floor of the Mosque, separately from men, had to race down stairs and through a narrow doorway to exit. Many stumbled and were trampled in the frenzied stampede to escape.
