SURPRISING INFO IN BACKGROUND CHECK OF POLICE CHIEF CANDIDATE

As the search winds down for Dothan`s next Police Chief, there is some surprising news about one of the final candidates. A background check of John Powell, who worked for the Escambia County Sheriff`s Department in Florida, revealed that he was arrested in 1987. He was apprehended for using a stun gun on a man on Pensacola Beach. The case was investigated several times, and no formal action was taken against him. City Manager Mike West, said that he didn`t know of the arrest when he interviewed Powell. Come to find out, it`s not all that uncommon for someone in law enforcement to have such things come out in a background check. Meanwhile, City Manager West was going to announce his choice for Dothan`s next chief today, but it looks like we`ll have to wait to find out who the new chief will be. All four final candidates for the job are undergoing those same background checks. Those investigations are being conducted by the Johnson City, Tennessee Police Department. The head investigator in Johnson City, has been out of commission, and that has put the process on hold. City Manager West hopes to reschedule his announcement within the next two to three weeks.
