MILITARY DEATH BENEFITS

Updated: January 7, 2009
President Bush is applauding an Alabama Senator`s efforts to increase the death benefit for the families of soldiers who die in combat. Yesterday, Senator Jeff Sessions went before the Senate Armed Services Committee to push for that increase. The Bill seeks to increase military death benefits to $100-thousand dollars and increase life insurance payouts to $400 thousand dollars. Those benefits would be retroactive to cover those already killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some do argue that the increse should apply to all active duty personell. All in all, the Bill has gained widespread bipartisan support from the likes of Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman. The proposal would cost the U. S. Government an estimated 450 million dollars for the first year.
