Truckers hitting the roads with dangerous chemicals and hazardous materials have a change coming their way, starting Monday, January 31st. Background checks will be required for truck drivers carrying hazmat materials.
A state may not issue, renew, upgrade, or transfer a hazardous materials endorsement for a commercial drivers license to anyone unless the Transportation Security Administration has determined that the individual does not pose a security risk that could deny the endorsement.
Currently there are no background checks required for hazmat material drivers, but the new policy says they must pass the security screening process, one hundred eighty days prior to the expiration date of their license.
Applicants wishing to renew or obtain a new hazardous materials endorsement, will have to travel to either Birmingham or Montgomery to complete an application and be fingerprinted.
