WACHOVIA SOUTHTRUST MERGER

Wachovia Corporation makes it`s official takeover of the Birmingham based Southtrust Bank...the merger, which went through yesterday, is expected to result in the loss of 43-hundred jobs. Industry experts predict between one-thousand and two-thousand jobs will be lost in the Birmingham area, positioning Southtrust`s competitors to hire well-qualified and experienced bankers. Some local banks say they`ve already hired former Southtrust employees. The official news of merger related layoffs will be announced later this week.
