It was announced yesterday, that Alabama is one of 37 states receiving additional money for families on welfare, and that money will be trickling down to the local level.
Secretary Tommy Thompson awarded more than two million dollars to T.A.N.F. (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families).
The Welfare to Work Program started in 1996, designed to assist families in transitioning from welfare...dependency to work...and although the program expired two years ago, it`s been so successful that it`s now operating under an extension.
Alabama received additional grant money based on high performance...locally, the program has many steps to ensure the success of it`s participants.
Administration at the local Welfare Office tells us there is even more evidence of success...the orginial one-thousand people who were receiving government assistance in Houston County, has dropped dramatically...down to about 475 people.
