Anyone who has driven along U. S. Highway 431 from our area to Pheonix City, knows it is one dangerous stretch of road...in fact, it`s ranked as one of the most dangerous stretches in the country, but now there is a move to change that. Transportation and other local officials held a kickoff luncheon yesterday, to address the road and all the problems it causes. READERS DIGEST published an article calling 431 the "Highway to Hell", and listed it as the second deadliest highway in the country in the year 2000, and years later the death toll has only increased, so law enforcement is now doing something about it. Officials say that their goal is to get a proposal, and if funding is approved over a three year period, road improvements will be complete at an estimated cost of a little more than five-thousand dollars. Project coordinators are expecting to hear from Alabama officials by early next week.
