STATE CRACKING DOWN ON SPEEDERS

A new effort by Governor Bob Riley is going into effect today. Governor Riley is alarmed by the rising number of deaths on Alabama`s highways, so starting yesterday, the sheriffs of all 67 counties in the state, along with police in several cities, have all agreed to help out state troopers, by enforcing their traffic laws. They`ll be looking to slow down speeders, stop reckless drivers, and also help save lives.
Riley calls the safety initiative "an interim step" until the state can increase it`s number of troopers.
The Department of Public Safety estimates that more than 13-hundred will die on Alabama roadways this year, an increase in fatalities of 31 percent over that number for 2003.
