WDHN is teaming up with The Dothan Eagle to combat illiteracy here in the Wiregrass.
Reading, writing and arthimetic. training needed to communicate in society...to get a good job...basics we all learn in school, right? Not so according to statistics...the very reason WDHN in partnership with The Dothan Eagle are teaming up to get the word about the learn to read program.
Several months ago, The Dothan Eagle ran an article on illiteracy in the Wiregrass Area, and General Manager Mike Smith starting thinking that possibly there was something WDHN could do to help the situation.
Starting August 2nd, a series of one half hour learn to read lessons will air on WDHN every morning, Monday through Friday from 5-5:30am...an important tool says Smith, who first saw the program airing in Detroit, and felt the need to bring it to the Wiregrass. According to The Dothan Eagle, who got their information from Wallace Commjunity College, 25% of people in the Wiregrass have substandard reading capabilities. Dothan Eagle`s Special Education Coordinator, Stephanie Madden says the Eagle is eager to help in the Literacy effort. The Dothan Eagle is sponsoring all the books, which will be placed at sponsor locations...Winn Dixie stores, WDHN and The Dothan Eagle.
Anyone wanting to participate can pick up the workbooks from these area sponsors free of charge beginning Wednesday, July 28th.
