Houston County Commissioners have received a grant for Homeland Security totaling 150-thousand dollars.
However, county commissioners "already" have a special project which the grant is earmarked for. Both the money and the project will be used to ensure the safety of area residents. Nine percent will cover warning sirens. The EMA has recommended that the nine sirens be placed in Columbia, Cottonwood, Webb, 2400 block of West Main, Houston County Library, Wicksburg, West Carroll Street and Hedstrom Drive. The recommendation was questions by some, but based need according to EMA officials.
The county still needs four additional sirens which are not covered by the grant. The county expects to fund two sirens this year, while the last two will be funded by next year`s budget. The sirens will be used for terrorist threats, as well as weather.
