The Houston County Jail is having a problem hiring and keeping Licensed Practical Nurses. Sheriff Lamar Glover says its impossible to keep LPN`s working for the county because the pay is too low.
Today at the County Commission meeting Glover asked commissioners for a four dollar raise for the nurses.
Glover says its imperative that he be able to attract qualified staff at the jail...He says on any day the jail houses 300 inmates and 145 are taking medication two times a day.
Most should get meds three times a day but there simply isn`t enough staff to do so.
Glover says no one is going to work in a jail environment making less money than they would at a hospital or private practice.
Before today the pay rate for LPN`s at the county jail was $8.68 to $13.00 an hour...But the raise will now move that rate up to $12.46 to $18.85 an hour.
