NAT`L DRIVER`S ED STANDARDS

Updated: January 7, 2009
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among fifteen to twenty year olds according to national studies. Experts with the National Transportation Safety Board are now calling for national driver education standards for teens eager to hit the road. Researchers say the problem lies in driver education courses varying from state to state. Larry Alums, driver instructor for Northview High School in Dothan, agrees. "This class is very important. They can miss a verb in an English class or a math problem, but if they miss a road sign or a turn, it could cost them their life. I think every student should be exposed to the same thing in the classroom," said Alums. Students currently pay a $40 fee to take drivers courses in Dothan City schools, a hefty fee for many students, even if the new standards are passed. But its those students who don`t take the class, Alums says he worries about.
