WIREGRASS PECAN CROP HAS PROBLEMS

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Nationwide the supply of pecans is low. Alabama is the seventh highest pecan producer in the country but growers have reported lower pecan yields because of scab infections. The excess rainfall is the cause of the infections. The fungus attacks the trees when there is excess moisture. Despite the early harvest problems growers expect an average season for this years crop. They also have a tip for those of you with pecan trees, after the rain; let your pecans dry on the ground for a few days before you pick them up. If you put them in a bucket while they are still wet they will mold. Also its better to but them in paper bags.
