Katie Turner is like a lot of 13 year- olds. She enjoys school and sports, but Katie has excelled in what some consider the most mentally challenging sport. The game of golf.
In fact, she was recently featured on the cover of the United States Golf Association magazine.
"Its pretty cool, kind of weird," says Turner.
Katie is a member of the Wiregrass Boys and Girls Club and part of their "just golf" program. a U.S.G.A. grant and a partnership with the Robert Trent Jones golf course allowed the club to purchase golf balls, clubs and instructions so the kids could learn to play.
"I like playing by myself. It gives me time to think about what I`m doing," says Turner.
Rob Day is the Executive Director of the Wiregrass Boys and Girls Club and said a representative from U.S.G.A. called him about their program.
They asked to highlight one who excelled, someone who had done a good job. Someone who we had seen improvement from beginning to end. The staff got together and decided that Katie was just a "no brainer". She was the one we needed to highlight," says Day.
So they mailed in Katies statistics and pictures and she was featured in the U.S.G.A. magazine as well as on
"Juniorlinks.com".
Day says, "Katie has a lot of potentioal. The problem with Katie is that she`s good at basketball, she`s good at soccer.....shes an athlete"
"Katie will be successful at whatever she does, it`s just a matter of what she wants to do," says Day.
Sounds like Katie will have some serious decisions to make.
