LUCY BAXLEY SAYS IT WILL BE TOUGH

Despite the state senate restoring some funding during this week`s special legislative session, Alabama Lt Governor Lucy Baxley says all is not well with the state budget. The senators approved the $4.2 billion dollar education trust fund monday night that would spend some 10 million less on public schools and colleges than is being spent now. It provides no money for school computers and a fraction of the amount usually spent on school textbooks. However, some scholarship and other programs were restored to the budget over the objections of Governor Bob Riley. While the house is set to consider the budget matters, Mrs. Baxley, a democrat says no only children, but all people in Alabama will suffer because of the budget shortfall. Lawmakers must finalize the budget within the next week with the new budget year beginning October 1st. JANA JACOBS-REPORTER WDHN
