Possible Asphalt Plant Coming to Houston County

The price of asphalt has more than doubled over the last ten years and that has Houston County commissioners thinking of new ways to cut costs.

The commission is hoping to cut costs by opening an asphalt plant in the county.

According to county engineers, the cost of asphalt has risen from nearly $60 per ton to over $90 a ton, and that cost takes about 75 percent of the county's road projects funds.

The plant is still a pipe dream for the commission but they are talking with other cities and counties about the possibility.

"With ATRIP and all the projects we have on county roads, we have $30 million worth of county roads that need to be resurfaced," said County Commission Chairman Mark Culver. "The better price we can get, the more miles of road we can resurface for the same dollar."

If the plant becomes reality it will only be for private use and will not compete with other local asphalt companies.
