Ethan's Mom Says She Would Have Taken His Place

By: Ken Curtis
Updated: February 10, 2013
Five-year-old Ethan Gilman, who was kept in a bunker for six days by Jimmy Lee Dykes, will talk to Dr. Phil this Wednesday, February 13, 2013 (WDHN 4:00pm). Dr. Phil will also talk to Ethan's mother, Jennifer Kirkland, to find out how her son is dealing with the after-effects of the experience.

"I would've taken his place at any moment," Jennifer Kirkland tells Dr. Phil, as she recounts her experience throughout the week her son was held underground.

Gilman was kidnapped on January 29, when Dykes attacked the boy's school bus near Midland City. Dykes boarded the bus and demanded to be given two boys from the group of more than 20 children. Bus driver Charles Pollard tried to block Dykes from going down the aisle, but was shot and killed by Dykes. The gunman then grabbed Gilman and took him to a near-by bunker where the two stayed for nearly a week until an FBI SWAT team descended into the bunker, killing Dykes and setting the boy free.

Again, the program will air this coming Wednesday on WDHN at 4:00pm.
