Referencing a bible verse from the book of Proverbs, Emmanuel Christian School Principal Mark Redmond said student Savoy Jones was known for the right he was doing. Jones died Tuesday at the age of 15. Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd said a heart problem is the likely reason.
"Everybody loved him," said Redmond. "He was one of those people that you wish you had a hundred of because he was a nice young man."
Jones played baseball and basketball for the Warriors. "On the basketball court and baseball field he would challenge (other athletes) to do their best," Redmond said. "He would expect a lot from the other students but he expected a lot from himself too."
"He always wanted to compete," said Emmanuel Christian Athletic Director David Murray. "He didn't like games where he was not a winner. (Savoy) was what a coach would want."
Jones death has left his fellow students and faculty members stunned but coping. "We hold on to the Lord and as we're holding on the Lord and we're praying He gives us the strength and comfort we need," Redmond said.
Funeral services will be held Sunday beginning at 2:00 at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Dothan. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7:00-9:00 at Sunset Funeral Home on Barrington Road.
