Report: Ethan Was Believed To Be In Immenent Danger

By: Stephen Crews
Updated: February 5, 2013
Reporters have continued throughout the night and into today to try and get more answers into what led the decision to end the standoff in Midland City.

CNN News was able to talk with Mike Brooks, a Law Enforcement Analyst for Headline News who provided the following information.

"According to a law enforcement source close to the Alabama hostage investigation, over the last 24 hours authorities saw the psychological state of the kidnapper, Jimmy Lee Dykes, go downward, which is what led them to attempt entry into the bunker.

Authorities were concerned that five-year-old Ethan was in imminent danger.

According to the source, the FBI Hostage Rescue Team made the tactical entry into the bunker. (They HRT is part of the FBI's Critical Incident Response group.)

The FBI HRT had a full deployment on the scene, which included the crisis negotiation unit, FBI SWAT operations, tactical intelligence, and a behavioral sciences unit.

These units gathered information, assessed the progress of negotiations and the suspect's state of mind. The units collectively believed he was in a downward spiral, psychologically."
