Saturday
morning the 400+ member State Executive Committee of the Alabama
Republican Party met for its bi-annual meeting. Top of the agenda was
the election of
officers for the next two-year terms. The focus of attention was on the
election of Chairman. Shelby County attorney Matt Fridy opposed Chairman
Armistead. Several
elected officials including Gov. Robert Bentley supported Fridy. Armistead
claimed the support of the rank and file Republicans in the state, and will return for another two-year term as Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party
"I
have served this party for almost fifty years and my highest honor has
been the privilege of being party chairman. I am grateful for the trust
bestowed upon me by members
of our party. This contest for chairman was a primary. Now we will do
what Republicans do after primaries, and that is to come together as a
team and take it to the Democrats," stated Armistead.
Governor
Robert Bentley requested a note be read congratulating Chairman
Armistead on his reelection and pledging to do his part to bring the
Party together. Chairman
Armistead thanked Matt Fridy for his willingness to serve the Party and
his continued support of the party after this weekend.
Also
elected on Saturday was George Williams, of Mobile, as Senior Vice
Chairman, Jeff Peacock , of Escambia County, as Vice Chair of Districts 1
& 2, Holly Lollar of
Birmingham, as Vice Chair for Districts 3,6 & 7, Harold Sachs, of
Winston County, as Vice Chair for Districts 4 & 5. Mallory
Jackson, of Shelby County, was re-elected Treasurer, and Sallie Bryant, of Birmingham, was re-elected Secretary.
"I
look forward to serving the next two years as Chairman and to work with
our elected officials and our state Republican Committee to further
solidify our position as
the majority party in Alabama. Together
we will put forward
a plan that will build upon past election success and grow our party.
And in the 2014 election cycle, we will elect Republicans to every
statewide office and defend and grow our majorities in the legislature
and pick up numerous county elected officials," said
Armistead.
