City Leaders Set Priorities for Dothan

Dothan's Landfill continues to be a top priority for city commissioners. Determining what to do with the city's trash was one many goals commissioners talked about in Friday's Strategic Planning Meeting.
Mayor Mike Schmitz said every year city leaders come together to discuss Dothan's long and short term goals. "We're working on a one year, five year, and 15 year plan. That way you know where you're going," explained Schmitz.
Each commissioner listed some of their top priorities for the upcoming year. Commissioners James Reading and Amos Newsome said a new pool at Andrew Bell Center is at the top of their list. Hamp Baxley's list includes completing phase one of Jim Oates Park. Critt Snellgrove wants the city to make a decision on the red light cameras. Commissioner Albert Kirkland said construction on South Saint Andrews Street needs to be completed. Taylor Barabree mentioned Dothan getting a minor league baseball team."A lot of tourism dollars are generated through baseball, which will bring more residents to Dothan," said Barbaree.
Economic development continues to be at the forefront for city leaders. Mayor Mike Schmitz said he's confident that the city could fund many of its goals for the year. The city has $19 million in reserve funding.
Day two of the Strategic Planning Meeting will take place Saturday morning in the conference room of the Wiregrass Museum of Art.
