Dothan bought nearly 90 acres of land on Campellton Highway and Taylor Road years ago with hopes of building Jim Oates Park, but the park never came.

At Tuesday's city commission administrative meeting, commissioners discussed moving forward with phase one of the park.

The city needs to hire a firm to draw up construction plans, which could cost the city $350,000.

A master plan of the park shows a senior center, six softball fields, and a trail.

This was a priority established by the city commission during their strategic planning process. Now this doesn't make a commitment to actually build the park because that could be well over $10 million, but it is the next step of making it a reality for James Oates Park to come true," explained City Manager Mike West.

The commissioners will decide on the firm to draw up the plans at the next commission meeting.
