Over 800 million people are on Facebook and 500 million on Twitter, there's no doubt almost everyone is using social media and now the Houston County Sheriff's Office is one of those millions.

The sheriff's office recently created a Facebook page to put out information such as pictures of people wanted in connection with crimes, missing child alerts, and simple tips to help keep you safe. "It acts as a packet of information to put out to the public," said Captain Antonio Gonzalez.

The sheriff's office is also trying to get followers for their Twitter account and they say you can help fight crime in a 140 characters or less."When they see stuff or we put stuff out on twitter and they have information to report they can always respond back to us and it will help fight crime more quickly," explained Gonzalez.

The sheriff's office said many of its cases come to a close because of help from the community and they feel sure increasing their social media presence will add to the number of tips they receive.

"We are trying to keep up with the times so it can be a tool that helps us deal with the job that we do, the investigations and quick response to these investigations to make quick apprehensions," said Gonzalez.
