The man sought for the murder of his stepfather earlier this week has been captured. Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes confirms Michael Allen Tharp, 40, was taken into custody at a truck stop Loxley, Alabama.
Hughes said investigators had information Tharp was headed to Baldwin County. Officers in southwest Alabama were contacted and took Tharp into custody at a truck stop without incident.
"We expect to transport Mr. Tharp back to Alabama soon," Hughes said. "When we get him back here we'll question him and go from there." A warrant charging Tharp with murder will likely be obtained no later than Monday morning.
Joseph Hendley, 68, was shot to death Wednesday after he and Tharp became involved in an argument. Relatives who live nearby said Tharp was intoxicated and demanded money from the victim. They said he confessed to the killing.
Deputies had worked around the clock since the shooting trying to find Tharpe. There were many reported sightings, all of which were investigated.
