That number tends to increase by up to 30% during the holidays and retailers are expected to lose over nine-billion dollars from shoplifting this season.
An estimated 100
dollars is tacked on to each consumer, but what's adding up to that cost may
surprise you.
"The quality meats
anything from filet mignon to large shrimp and lobsters items like this are often
stolen during the holidays," said Sgt. David.
The Dothan Police
Department said they also see a large increase of people stealing fine wines and
liquors, but thieves aren't stopping in the grocery section.
"Bath and body sets and
fragrance gift sets are hot items," said James Piedra, Northside K-Mart
manager.
Axe products are the
fifth most stolen item during the holidays and Chanel No. 5 perfume comes in at
number two; and topping off the list are big name shoes like Air Jordans.
Retailers are trying to outsmart shoplifters by beefing up their security
"We take extra measures
to make sure those things are secured with sensor tags so if they are taken out
of the store an alarm will sound and we can get lost prevention involved at
that time," said Piedra.
Retailers also said
customers play a major role in decreasing shoplifting by being vigilant and
reporting suspicious activity.
