Auburn Fires Gene Chizik

By: Stephen Crews
Updated: November 25, 2012

Auburn University has decided to part ways with head football coach Gene Chizik.

"After careful consideration and a thorough evaluation of our football program, I have recommended that Coach Chizik not be retained," said Jacobs.  "President Gogue has accepted my recommendation.  Earlier this morning, I informed Gene that he will not return as head coach."

The university announced the decision on the heels of a disappointing 3-8 season that ended with an embarrassing 49-0 defeat to in-state rival Alabama last Saturday. Chizik's career at Auburn ends after only four seasons on the Plains, and just two years removed from a BCS National Championship. His final coaching record at Auburn is 33-19.

Jay Jacobs said he has formed a search committee to find Chizik's replacement which includes Auburn alumni Mac Crawford, Pat Sullivan and Bo Jackson.

Potential Candidates (most recent position):

Bobby Petrino, former Arkansas head coach

Gus Malzahn, current head coach at Arkansas State

Jimbo Fisher, current head coach at Florida State
