Gun sales have soared nationally following Tuesday's re-election of President Barack Obama. Gun dealers say they have seen a significant increase in sales the past few days.  Especially popular are high powered rifles.

Local gun retailers say they're busy selling weapons. "Four years ago, the day after the election, gun sales blew up," said Pawn City's Scott Smith. "They sky rocketed overnight and we had a feeling that it was going to happen the same way this time around."

Smith said he's been stocking up on the store's gun supply for weeks."Since the debate a couple of weeks ago, when Barack Obama mentioned banning assault rifles, (business) has picking up ," said Smith. "My distributor called me Tuesday and said that she had 500 assault rifles in stock. Yesterday they had none. They were all gone overnight. Luckily, I stocked up several months ago. We've been stocking up all year because we knew it was (the brisk sales were) coming."

Pawn City isn't alone. Stores across the U.S. have been seeing a boost in sales, especially assault rifles. "Everybody gets pretty antsy when you are having a right taken away from you and that's pretty much what it is," said Smith

Smith predicts gun and ammunition prices will also continue to rise with the demand.

Smith and Wesson stock rose nearly 10% the day after the election and experts forecast its value will continue to rise.
