Marcus Ward

Marcus Ward, a resident of Dothan, formerly of Headland, passed away early Wednesday evening, October 31, 2012, in a Dothan hospital.

            Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, November 3, 2012, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Norman C. Simmons officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the mortuary.

            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bethlehem Baptist Church, 2506 State Highway 134, East, Headland, AL 36345 or to the Henry County Veterans Memorial Park, Inc., P.O. Box 23, Abbeville, AL 36310.

            Marcus Ward was born March 9, 1922, in Henry County, son of the late John Ward and Eunice Kirkland Ward. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with four Bronze Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead. Mr. Ward was the recipient of a Purple Heart, due to having been wounded in France, on September 26, 1944, and also on January 14, 1945.  Mr. Ward was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church, near Headland. He was preceded in death by his wife, L.E. Horne Ward, four sisters, Jewel Brackin, Ruth Armstrong and twins, Ruth and Nell Ward, and two brothers, Odell Ward and Eugene Ward.

            Surviving relatives include a brother, Bennie Ward and wife, Pam, Shorterville; sisters-in-law,  Nelle Ward, Dothan; and Mattie Ward, Malvern; nieces and nephews, Janice and Roger Griffin, Sheila and Ricky Cobb, Steve and Donna Ward, Todd and Candace Ward, Barbara Edwards, Michael Armstrong, Gary Armstrong, Lamar Ward, Judy Schad,  Carlton Ward, Annette Ulry, Stancil Ward and Doodlebug Harrison; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

            Serving as active pallbearers will be Todd Ward, Ricky Cobb, Roger Griffin, Jason Cory, Curry Parker and Danny Hamm.

            Mr. Ward enjoyed trail-walking and helping friends at Somerset Assisted Living where he lived for the past four years. He considered the staff and residents part of his family.
