It's the time of the year when we encourage our children to take candy from strangers, but it can be dangerous.

Dothan firefighters and police say Halloween can be a spooky night if parents don't take the proper precautions.

They advise families to plan their trick or treating route in advance, mapping out the homes of people they know.

Never accept candy that may have tears in its wrapper or look like it's been tampered with.

Also--look out for open flames--candles and jack-o-lanterns can pose a fire threat.

Watch out for long costumes, as they could catch on fire or cause children to trip and hurt themselves.
