Judges Removes Himself From Criminal Case Involving Former Ashford High Teacher

By: Ken Curtis
Updated: October 24, 2012

A Houston County judge has recused himself from a case involving drug charges and bail revocation proceedings against a former Ashford High School teacher. In his decision, Circuit Judge Kevin Moulton cited his relationship with the family of Jason Allen Andrews as the basis.

Andrews, 32, was arrested in May, just after the 2011-2012 school year ended.  He was charged with the manufacture and possession of methamphetamine.

Andrews was released on bond but jailed again in August on charges he violated the terms of his release. A hearing was held a short time later and Andrews was released again, this time with conditions including an order he attend a drug and alcohol treatment center.

Assistant District Attorney Kristen Shields, in a September 21 motion, claims Andrews did not abide by the terms of release.  The prosecutor alleges Andrews did not cooperate with a Court Referral Officer, as directed by the court, and failed a drug test.

A hearing on the latest bond revocation request was scheduled Thursday but has been delayed because Moulton removed himself from presiding over the case.  It is expected to be held in the near future after another judge is appointed to hear arguments. He will remain jailed until the hearing is held.  It will then be up to the newly-appointed judge to decide if Andrews will be released on bond again.

Andrews was employed at Ashford High School for about two years.
