This week is a difficult anniversary for the family of Lance Corporal Jason Barfield.  The Ashford native was killed in Afghanistan one year ago this week while trying to save his comrades.

Monday the marine's family and friends gathered in his honor at the Ashford Depot. With their support system by their side, Kelli and Ray Barfield reflected on the day that changed their lives forever.

"We were out in the front yard, and I was bagging leaves on the mower and she was on the back porch trimming one of the dogs and when we saw one of the blue government vans  come around we knew something was wrong," described Ray Barfield.

Kelli Barfield  said, "We tried to get him to leave but it made it too real. Everything after that is a blur. Nothing will be the same before they stepped in our driveway,"   said Barfield.

The Barfields said the last year has been tough, but they made it through by leaning on their faith and the community.

"I don't think we could have went through this last year without the friends we and the Marines. It's amazing what has happened and I don't think we could have made it without them all," said Ray Barfield.

Monday's gathering was in preparation for a bigger memorial service on Saturday. The service will be held at the Ashford Depot at 9AM, Military and city leaders along with family and friends will honor Jason's life and the legacy he leaves behind.
