Charles Alexander Helms, Jr.

Charles Alexander Helms, Jr. a resident of the Terrace at Grove Park, Dothan, died Sunday evening, October 21, 2012. He was 83.

            Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 24, 2012, in the Worship Center of the First Baptist Church of Headland with Reverend Mike Wehner and a grandson, David Thomas officiating.  Burial with full military rites will follow in the Headland Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Wednesday in the church. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Headland Baptist Cemetery Fund, 301 East Church Street, Headland, AL 36345 or one's favorite charity.

            Mr. Helms, son of the late Charles Alexander Helms, Sr. and Ruth Estelle Hobby Helms, was born in Chipley, Florida and reared in Andalusia. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1946 and served in World War II. Mr. Helms retired in 1968 from the U.S. Air Force with the rank of Master Sergeant. He served in the Korean War and was also a veteran of Vietnam. Upon his retirement from the military, Mr. Helms became employed as a laboratory technician by Baptist Hospital in Selma and later retired as an assistant administrator from J. Paul Jones Memorial Hospital in Camden. He was a member of Camden Baptist Church. Mr. Helms was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Williams Helms; a sister, Ruby Jean Helms and son-in-law, Frederic Thomas.

            Surviving relatives include his daughter, Dena Helms Thomas, Tyrone, GA; two sons, Charles A. Helms, III and wife, Diane, Headland and Franklin E. Helms and wife Laby, Honduras; four sisters, Ruth Seal, LaGrange, GA;  Margaret Thomas, Millbrook, AL; Doris Bush, Montgomery and Eleanor Ball, White Settlement, TX; a sister-in-law, Martha Jean Green Hines, Millbrook, AL; a brother-in-law, Thomas Ray Williams, Selma; six grandchildren, David Thomas, Louisville, KY; Sarah Thomas, Tyrone, GA; Nikki Helms Duffle and husband, David, Camden; Scott Helms and wife Miranda, Perry, GA; Jay Helms and wife, Candice, Dothan; Chad Helms and wife, Danielle, Headland; five great-grandchildren, Emma, Ella, Finn, Audrey and Andrew Helms.
