Dothan's Landfill is almost full; with only two years worth of space left, the city decided to expand. The city paid nearly $1million for 183 acres of land adjacent to the current landfill.

The price of the land is not the only cost associated with the landfill expansion.  In an interview Tuesday City Manager Mike West explained what else is involved.

" With the new equipment for the landfill, the purchase of the landfill, the engineering , and the cost of developing the first cell in the new site will probably run somewhere in the neighborhood of $8 million," explained West.

But the expansion could mean more land for trash disposal; it could mean Dothan residents may have to start paying for trash pickup.

City Commissioner Amos Newsome said that's something the commission might consider.

"There may be a charge for garbage pickup that  just may be. It depends on the financial situation of the city and the current flow of cash that the city receives," said Newsome.

The city has flirted with the idea of a fee for garbage collection in 2011. At that time the plan likely would have left residents with a monthly garbage collection fee of $3.13.

West said, "That (garbage fee) will be one of the options that is always looked at. Ultimately that's a decision the city commission makes on whether they want to do that or not. Most communities in our state do charge a garbage fee. The city commission here has always wanted to continue paying for garbage with other sources of revenue whenever this came up," explained West.
