Grover Lee Bryan, Jr.

Grover Lee Bryan, Jr., a resident of Headland, died late Sunday morning, October 14, 2012.  He was 89.

            Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 17, 2012, in the Headland United Methodist Church with Reverend Phil Craddock officiating. Burial will follow in the Headland Methodist Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M. Wednesday in the church family life center.

            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, AL 36303 or to the Headland United Methodist Church Building Fund, 103 West King Street, Headland, AL 36345.

            Mr. Bryan was born in Miami, Florida and moved to Morgan, Georgia with his family as a child. He was a 1941 graduate of Morgan High School. Mr. Bryan was drafted into the U. S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and served as a Flight Engineer during World War II. After the war, he moved to Albany, Georgia where he was an active member of the Porterfield United Methodist Church. He retired as a city letter carrier with the U. S. Postal Service after thirty-seven years employment. While a resident of Albany, Mr. Bryan drove Meals on Wheels, coached Little League sports, and was involved in many other community activities. Mr. Bryan moved to Headland in 2001 where he was a member of the Headland United Methodist Church and its Curry Woods Men's Bible Class. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was well known for his fish fries and lasagna. Mr. Bryan was an avid baseball and Auburn fan and will be remembered as a man who loved his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover Lee Bryan, Sr. and Ruth Cleveland Bryan, a son, Terry Stevens Bryan, two sisters, Annie Will Rogers and Inez Glass and two brothers, R. H. Bryan and Aaron Bryan.

            Surviving relatives include his wife, Mary Owens Vann Bryan, Headland; a daughter, Susan Bryan Jessup and husband, Francis M. (Buddy) Jessup, III, Birmingham; two sons, David Lee Bryan and wife, Susan, Dawsonville, GA and Tracy Patrick Bryan; two brothers, Bill Bryan and wife, Barbara, Opelika, AL; and Joe Bryan and wife, Barbara, Headland; five grandchildren, Shane Bryan (Delenna), Clay Bryan (Rachel), Rusty Jessup, Owens Jessup and Kate Jessup; two great-grandchildren, Luke and Jake Bryan.
