John I. "Lucky" Martin, Sr

John I. "Lucky" Martin, Sr., 69, of Dothan passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at his residence.

Graveside services with military honors will be 1 pm Saturday, October 13, 2012 at Sunset Memorial Park with Rev. H. Teague officiating and Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11 am until 1pm at Sunset Funeral Home.

Mr. Martin was born February 20, 1943 in Houston County and he resided most of his life in Dothan. Mr. Martin was a graduate of Carver High School class of 1962, and was a veteran of the US Army serving in the Vietnam War. He later attended the University of Colorado and received his B.S. and Master's degree from Tuskegee University. Mr. Martin was employed with Career Development Center and later at Fort Rucker in Personal Management until his retirement in 2000. Mr. Martin was a education liaison with NAACP Association with the City of Dothan and very instrumental with the "Yes We Can" campaign. Mr. Martin was recently inducted into the Education Hall of Fame. He also served on the zoning board, as president of Kappa Alpha PSI, director of Veteran Affairs and Tuskegee University National Athletic Association. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church. Preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother and 2 sisters.

Survivors include his wife Brunice T. Martin of Dothan; 11 children; 12 grandchildren; 4 brothers; 3 sisters; a host of nieces and nephews also survive.
