In
response to the announcement
on Friday that the Obama Justice Department has awarded preclearance to
Alabama's legislative redistricting plan that was submitted for review,
Speaker Mike Hubbard released the following statement:
"I'm
pleased, but not particularly surprised, that the Obama Justice
Department has awarded its seal of approval to the legislative
redistricting
plan. This is proof positive that the districts were created fairly and
drawn without a political agenda.
The
only political agenda that exists in this process is among those who
would continue to fight this plan even after a Democrat-dominated
Justice Department has determined it to be fair and equitable to all
Alabamians.
We
made it clear from the outset that we were committed to seeking public
input from across the state and utilizing the federal census
data in a manner that resulted in fairly drawn legislative districts
that fully fell within the parameters of the law. And that's exactly
what happened.
I congratulate the Reapportionment Committee, House Chairman Jim McClendon and Senate Chairman Gerald Dial on a job well done.
I
look forward to the day when Alabama may once again run its own affairs
and determine its own destiny without having to seek permission
from Washington, D.C. to follow the course we have charted."
