Governor Bentley Talks Jobs At Dothan Chamber Luncheon

By: Kadie Crowell
Updated: October 2, 2012
New jobs have been the recent focus, but Mr. Bentley's most recent message for Dothan said we shouldn't take small businesses already here for granted.

The Governor said his message is simple; he wants to see more big companies like Airbus come to Alabama, but he also said small, local businesses are the key to the state's economic stability.

"The retention of the industries we already have here are more important and the small companies that are here hiring one or two  people...really more jobs are created in this state by existing businesses and small businesses than the major companies we recruit into Alabama." -explained Bentley

Governor Bentley said he knows a lot of people in the Wiregrass are focusing on the plans that are in the works, but he also said we need to remember all the revenue the Medical College will bring in.

"One of the things I think we can be very proud in this area is the new Medical School and the first class is going to start in 2013 and 150 students a year that brings in a lot of money." Anticipated Bentley

Governor Bentley said the revenue boosting doesn't stop while students are in school, he expects physicians will come back to Dothan to open their medical practice.

With the hints we've been hearing about, the Medical College might not be the only thing bringing in jobs, but Governor Bentley says he has to be able to compete with other states for those jobs.

He explained the key to competing for those jobs is Alabamians voting yes on an upcoming amendment.

This amendment he referred to is Amendment Two, if passed it would allow the state to decrease debt by refinancing bonds which could bring a lot more jobs to the state and save Alabama up to 30-million dollars.
