One Step Closer To Construction For Two New Libraries In Dothan

Updated: October 3, 2012

Dothan is one step closer to having two new libraries. Tuesday Dothan city commissioners declared land on North Oates Street as surplus and no longer needed for municipal purposes.

The land's deed was turned over to the Dothan Library Board for construction of a new library. Library Director Bettye Forbes said the land for the library's satellite location at Westgate Park will be leased to the library board.

"The library will not own part of Westgate Park.  It will be leased to the library board for 99 years and then we'll worry about renewing the lease at that point. This is the last official hurdle before we begin construction," explained Forbes,

Dothan committed $2.5 million dollars to the construction of the libraries back and July and shortly after the Houston County Commission pledged $1 million in cash and in-kind services to the construction of the library.

An official ground breaking ceremony will take place October 17th. The project is expected to be complete at the end of 2013.
